PREFACE

Project Leader

Eiichi Maruyama

The Agency of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has decided to embark on a project entitled Research and Development of Ultimate Manipulation of Atoms and Molecules (Atom Technology), for ten years from fiscal 1992, as one of the Industrial Science and Technology Frontier Programs. A total budget of about 25,000,000,000 is to be thrown into this project, most of which will be entrusted to the Angstrom Technology Partnership (ATP), a technological research association, through the New Energy & Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

A Joint Research Contract has been concluded between the National Institute for Advanced Interdisciplinary Research (NAIR), AIST, and ATP to run an intensive research by gathering researchers from industrial governmental and academic sectors at the Joint Research Center for Atom Technology (JRCAT) founded in NAIR, Tsukuba Science City. More than 90 researchers, including foreigners, are currently carrying out an active research at JRCAT. We are making every effort to play a leading role in the theater of ATOM TECHNOLOGY by positively encouraging collaborations with public research organizations and private enterprises, both domestic and overseas.
